Detailed description of San Dimas Canyon Golf Course

San Dimas Canyon Golf Course is a Public 18 hole golf course located at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains in San Dimas, California.

San Dimas Canyon Golf Course first opened for play in 1964. The course was designed by Dan Murray.

The golf course runs along the base of the San Gabriels amongst the native California Oak and other natural vegetation. Deer, bobcat, and coyote often frequent the golf course as this is testament to the true rural back to nature setting of the golf course. San Dimas Canyon Golf Course's fairways are tree lined and require a well placed tee ball to have a shot to the green, where the real challenge lies. The greens are gently undulated and the hillside slope definitely influences the roll of the ball.

Par for the course is 72. From the back tees the course plays to 6,400 yards. From the forward tees the course measures 5,375 yards. The longest hole on the course is # 3, a par-5 that plays to 552 yards. The shortest hole on the course is # 2, a par-3 that plays to 145yards from the back tees.

Watch out for # 4, a 393 yard par-4 challenge and the #1 handicap hole on the course. The easiest hole at San Dimas Canyon Golf Course is # 17, a 461 yard par-5.

San Dimas Canyon Golf Course offers a challenge to players of all skill levels. The golf course consists of five par 3's (3 of which play over 200 yards) and five par 5's that are reachable in 2 shots, but don't let this fool you, as there is a large amount of risk vs reward associated with these holes. Water hazards come into play on 4 holes with out of bounds opportunities present on 10 of the 18 holes.

I play the course every Thursday and I also play other courses locally. This is by far the best kept public course in the area. It has 5 par 3's amd 5 par 5's and this is why it plays slower than other courses. In the middle of the day they allow 5 somes which again slows play. It is a fine course inspite of the 5 + hour rounds.

I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS COURSE BUT BE READY TO SPEND THE DAY. THE PACE OF PLAY IS SLOW. THEY LET 5 SOMES ON AND THEY SHOULD NOT. THEY ALSO OVER BOOK THE COURSE A LOT.

Would travel: 20-30 Miles, Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: I would play again, Better than average course for the area

For the money (E-mail Specials) not bad but you have to tee off either real early in the morning or late afternoon during the summer. The course is maintained at fair condition watching the deer come down from the hillside adds to the experience. Yet if you tee off mid-morning expect to be on the course for at least 5-6 hours they always over book and the marshalls are slow to help speed up the pace of play.

Would travel: 0-10 Miles, Not Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: I would play again

I play San Dimas at least monthly, sometimes more often. I've played in tournaments there and they do a first-rate job with such events. I always find it a challenge, especially the greens, though I usually do not exceed the 2 putt per hole average at San Dimas. In a tournament last year a friend of mine who is a member of a country club played in our foursome. His comment was this: "I can't believe this is a public course. The greens and the fairways are in top notch condition. What a great course."

Need to stop allowing groups of 5! Slows down play and is frustrating to see 3 carts around the green ahead of you.
